The desired surface finish of the slate determines the next process. Slabs that require a stippled non-skid texture are passed through a flame texturing machine which spalls the surface with a combination of heat and cold water. Tiny irregular fragments flake away leaving a roughened finish, similar to a split texture which is guaranteed to be flat and even in thickness. Additionally, a bush hammered surface can also be achieved for areas of paving that require maximum surface stability.
